VM Training for HTA

This year I have been working in conjunction with the HTA to provide their Garden Centre members Visual Merchandising Training & Consultancy. Courses I have run for the HTA include Bodmin Plant & Herb Nursery, Dobbies Garden Centers and Wych Cross Garden Centre, Sussex. The courses we offer are mainly based around the practical / theory workshops which are held on site at the garden centers. There is also the option of taking an online version of the workshop too and both courses can be tailored to meet the clients requirements.

Over the past couple of years we have received an increase in inquiries about our courses from Garden Centers & Nurseries, it seems like these clients are starting to recognise themselves as retailers and interested to learn more about retail Visual Merchandising techniques which can assist their business. The photos below show some of the practical merchandising tasks that we carried out on the courses, we worked on creating height, strong promotional themes and link selling techniques.

Christmas at Longleat

We worked again this year with Longleat House & Safari Park to install Christmas.

The first project that we worked on during October was the Christmas Shop which is located in the main grounds. I had the help of another freelancer, Frankie O’Brien whom I worked with during my time at Harrods. We designed the layout and product placement in the shop, then worked together to Visual Merchandise the shop, creating colour stories. Creating the colour stories will also help Longleat to create more link selling opportunities, at the same time creating an easy to shop experience for their customers. I have attached a couple of images of the merchandising examples below ;

We then returned again in November, just before trade started for Christmas to dress some of the rooms within the main house. The photo I have attached below shows the dressing in the Kitchen shop, which used to act as a meat store during the house’s history.

Courses have been held at the companies head office in Havant, Portsmouth and carried out within their onsite factory store. Having access to the factory store for the course has been extremely useful, as this gives the attendees chance to practice their new found VM skills.

The course has been run for all levels of staff who work for the brand. Covering the following subject areas ;

Key basic grouping and display principles, Creating a promotional space and setting a promotional monthly calendar, VM techniques when merchandising product – how to create a more pleasurable retail experience for your customer, Creating effective store layouts and the importance of carrying out regular customer flow exercises.

VM Training Blossom Bags & Accessories

August has been busy for VMC running many bespoke retail courses, which are usually held on the retailers premises.

I had the pleasure in meeting independent retailers Dawn & Amy Lawrence this month, when they booked a besoke Visual Merchandising Training Course to be held in their store in Tiptree, Essex. Dawn & Amy own Blossom Bags & Accessories and they have been trading over a year.

The course included the key VM subject areas of ; window dressing , effective visual merchandising principles, mannequin styling/dressing , effective store layout principles and the importance of carrying out regular customer flow exercises. I also spent time looking at all areas of the store and together we discussed ways on how these can be improved.

The photos below show the great window displays that Dawn & Amy worked on whilst on the course ;

Chelsea Flower Show 2015

I was asked again this year by the RHS to assist with the judging of the exhibits and stands at Chelsea Flower Show. It is such a fantastic opportunity to view some fab garden designs and a lot of very well merchandised trade stands. Our judging team really noticed that the presentation levels has increased since last year and most stands are now at such a high level. I have added below some photos of my favourite gardens at this years show and the floral displays seen at Smythson in Sloane St to celebrate Chelsea Flower Show ;

John Smedley Window Installation

This month I worked along side One Big Company to install a window installation at the John Smedley store in Mayfair, London. This was a project designed by One Big Company, who designed the interesting props that were used within the installation. The window display was launching the Spring 15 Knitwear collection.

VM Training For The HTA

This month has been busy teaching on the Visual Merchandising Short Courses for London College of Fashion & Central Saint Martins.

I have also been working with the HTA on providing Visual Merchandising Training to their Garden Centre partners. The first Garden Centre I have worked with on this project was Wych Cross in East Sussex. The team at Wych Cross have been amazing to work with and have been really up beat about the training and then putting their new skills into practice. The training involved a 1 day group course held in January, which was written to meet the specific learning needs of the business.

Then I returned this week to carry out a practical day to work with the course attendees on their areas on the sales floor and outdoor selling areas. The staff had made great progress since my last visit and we achieved some great eye catching selling areas this week. We created a Spring themed focal point at the store entrance , worked on re merchandising the condiment offer to create link selling opportunities by merchandising this with home accessories. We moved fixtures that were blocking main walkways, to encourage customer flow and re merchandised key hot spot sections within the outdoor plant and shrub area.

The team at Wych Cross all agreed that they found attending the course and also having the benefit of a practical day was extremely useful for them to put their new found skills into practice and having me on site to offer practical / hands on advice.

Please find further information on the bespoke retail courses which I offer on http://www.visualmerchandisingcourses.co.uk/Visual-Merchandising-Courses-for-Retailers.html

Photos show symmetrical displays created with plants and scrubs , creating link selling opportunities by merchandising co-coordinating plants and pots together. The last photo shows how we have opened up the main walkway by creating a clear pathway to the rear of the store. Adding a plant area towards the rear of the store creates back focal point.
